HAVANA, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Cuba has reported 2,197 more cases and 21 deaths from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), for a total of 934,965 confirmed infections and 8,058 fatalities, the Ministry of Public Health said on Sunday.

"We do not expect a sharp reduction in the figures, but a gradual decrease," explained the ministry's national director of hygiene and epidemiology, Francisco Duran.

The epidemiologist said that 8,683 cases are in the active stage, which is a high figure but lower than previous stages.

The Cuban province of Pinar del Rio reported another 389 infections in the last 24 hours, bringing the incidence rate to 1,745.1 per 100,000 inhabitants, the highest in the country.

In Cuba, a mass immunization program is currently underway, and more than 60 percent of the population has been vaccinated against the disease.

Immunization is being carried out using the Cuban vaccines Abdala, Soberana-02, and Soberana Plus, three of the five vaccines developed in the country.
