RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian police said Friday that they have arrested 11 wildlife traffickers and rescued about 200 animals set for illegal sale.
The suspects are accused of illegally selling the animals through social media, said the Federal Police at a press conference.
According to the police, some of these animals are endangered species captured in the Amazon rainforest, including macaws, toucans, monkeys and reptiles such as caimans.
Since some of the captured species are carriers of zoonoses, or diseases that are transmissible from animals to humans, the suspects are also accused of "endangering public health," the police said.
