Scolari helped Terry to retain England football captaincy

London, Aug.20 : Chelsea's Brazilian coach Phil Scolari gave a personal reference to help John Terry retain the England captaincy, reports The Sun.

According to the tabloid, the "Blues" boss spoke twice with England coach Fabio Capello, urging him to award the armband to the Chelsea man.

That support paid off yesterday when Capello named Terry as skipper ahead of bookies' favourite Rio Ferdindand.

A close pal of Scolari said: "Felipe has learnt a lot about Terry in the last few weeks. He knows how much the England captaincy means to him - that's why he spoke with Capello. He told Capello that Terry is a natural leader and someone who other big players at Chelsea react well to and respect."

Capello said: "We need a captain with a big personality at all times. But Rio is a very important player and will be vice-captain."
